Acer palmatum 'Toyama nishiki'
Variegated Weeping Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

'Toyama nishiki' is a variegated weeping Japanese maple that is quite beautiful. The pink bronze new growth is accentuated by bright pink and white irregular variegation. This plant is so amazing that the reversion is propagated under the name 'Nancy's Legacy'. When producing 'Toyama nishiki' one should produce only from the most variegated plants. Any branches displaying no variegation should be pruned out. 'Toyama nishiki' turns bright yellow to orange in the fall. Late in autumn you may even get a pink-red. 'Toyama nishiki' may reach 3 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years. 'Hana matoi' is reported to be a seedling from 'Toyama nishiki', which means this tree has some interesting genetics.

We often get asked how are ‘Toyama nishiki’ and ‘Goshiki shidare’ different as some books declare them as synonymous. These two cultivars do get confused some in the nursery trade which adds to the confusion. While ‘Toyama nishiki’ and ‘Goshiki shidare’ are similar, from our experience they are in fact different. ‘Goshiki shidare’ tends to hold its pink red spring color longer than ‘Toyama nishiki’ when grown side by side. ‘Toyama nishiki’ often retains a more bronze green color in the summer months, while ‘Goshiki shidare’ may turn a brighter green for the summer. Also ‘Toyama nishiki’ and ‘Goshiki shidare’ may have similar fall colors, but ‘Toyama nishiki’ starts out yellow, but takes longer to turn orange than ‘Goshiki shidare’ when grown in the exact same environment. Again, grown in different conditions they may appear similar, but this is our experience when grown near each other.
