Magnolia tripetala

White Flowering

Deciduous Magnolia

Zones 5-9

Magnolia tripetala, commonly known as umbrella magnolia or umbrella-tree, is a deciduous understory tree native to the eastern United States, particularly the Appalachian, Ozark, and Ouachita regions. It is named for its very large leaves that cluster at the branch tips, forming an umbrella-like canopy. In late spring, it produces large, creamy white, fragrant flowers that can be 8–10 inches wide, sometimes with a subtle reddish-purple or maroon center. This is a moderately to fast-growing tree that typically reaches 15–20 ft in about 10 years and can mature to 30–45 ft over time.
